Full Size Beds
Also known as double beds, full size beds are 54 inches wide and 75 inches long. They are considered just big enough for a couple to share, but still small enough to fit into very small bedrooms. The economy of size is why so many standard hotel rooms have full size beds.
Hotel rooms frequently add a few extra inches to the length of the bed, making for wht’s called an “XL full bed”, which is 54 inches wide and 80 inches long. These are also sometimes referred to as Double XL beds.
While it may be possible for a couple to share a full size bed, unless both people are very small or are only using the bed for one night, full size beds are better made for teens and older children. They are an excellent upgrade from a twin size bed, which is only 39 inches wide and 75 inches long.
Full Size Loft Bed
If you are tight on space, a full size loft bed is just about the best compromise available between comfort and space efficiency. With a loft bed you can create a mini office or study area under the bed, which can open up a little 14 by 14 foot dorm room in a really surprising way. If both roommates get loft beds, there’s enough room for a gaming setup, complete with two chairs and a coffee table. In that setup, actually, its even better to get a small gaming ottoman because then you can stow stuff in the ottoman, sit on it, and use it as a little table. It also makes a great place to put your feet up while you are sitting under the loft bed studying.
Full size loft beds cost about $400-$450 plus shipping. Many of them come with built-in desks and bureau drawers, or with full-fledged staircases instead of just a ladder.
Full Size Bunk Beds
There are a few options for full size bunk beds — you can get them with both beds full size, or the top bed as a twin size and the bottom as a full size. A lot of these setups also include dresser drawers and even built in desks. Most of them are made of wood, but about 20% of what’s available is made of metal. Wood is really the better material for a bed — just in case somebody’s head gets knocked.
A good-quality full bed frame will have a bar going both length-wise and width wise to support the mattress. Some people put a large sheet of plywood under the box spring to help spread the weight around.
If you go with a loft bed or a bunk bed, a headboard is not going to work. But if you want a simple solid wood headboard, they can be found for about $200. There are storage headboards, but having stuff right behind your bed whie you sleep is not optimal, and if you like to sit up in bed and read or study you will need to stuff a lot of pillows behind you to not fall into the storage cubbies, and the stuff that’s in the storage cubbies is going to get pushed around by the pillows.
